Thomas Edison was an American inventor who is considered one of America's leading businessmen and innovators. Edison rose from humble beginnings to work as an inventor of major technology, including the first commercially viable incandescent light bulb. He is credited today for helping to build America's economy during the Industrial Revolution.
In his 84 years, Thomas Edison acquired a record number of 1, patents singly or jointly and was the driving force behind such innovations as the phonograph, the incandescent light bulb and one of the earliest motion picture cameras. In addition to his talent for invention, Edison was also a successful manufacturer and businessman who was highly skilled at marketing his inventions—and himself—to the public. He was the seventh and last child born to Samuel Edison Jr. Thomas Edison received little formal education, and left school in to being working on the railroad between Detroit and Port Huron, Michigan , where his family then lived.

Thomas Edison unveiled the phonograph —which reproduced sounds by means of the vibration of a stylus following a groove on a rotating disc—in December Edison was projected into worldwide prominence and was dubbed the Wizard of Menlo Park. Thomas Edison played a significant part in introducing the modern age of electricity. His inventions included the phonograph, the carbon-button transmitter for the telephone speaker and microphone , the incandescent lamp , the first commercial electric light and power system, an experimental electric railroad , and key elements of motion-picture equipment. Edison was the quintessential American inventor in the era of Yankee ingenuity. He began his career in , in the adolescence of the telegraph industry, when virtually the only source of electricity was primitive batteries putting out a low-voltage current. Before he died, in , he had played a critical role in introducing the modern age of electricity.

Edison is credited for contributing to various inventions, including the phonograph , the kinetoscope , the dictaphone , the electric lamp in particular the incandescent light bulb , and the autographic printer. He also greatly improved the telephone by inventing the carbon microphone. Most of these inventions were not completely original but improvements of earlier inventions. However, one of Edison's major innovations was the first industrial research and development lab, which was built in Menlo Park and West Orange. Throughout the 20th century, Edison was the world's most prolific inventor.
One of the most prolific and multi-talented geniuses the world has ever seen, Thomas Alva Edison's life is indeed an inspiration for each new generation. Today we live in a world that would not have been possible if not for several of his important inventions — the electric light bulb, the motion picture camera, electric power distribution, the phonograph, and a host of other things that we take for granted today. In fact, he still holds the world record for the maximum number of patents, numbering in all! Dyer was a patent attorney who worked for Edison, while Commerford was a technical magazine editor who published many of Edison's papers. There is consequently a great deal of focus on the technical aspects of his inventions and not so much on his personality and nature. However, as a chronological account of his life, the biography does full justice to its title. This brilliant scientist, businessman and inventor had in fact, practically no formal education.
