Handbook of Applied Spatial Analysis pp Cite as. In recent years, the spatial econometrics literature has exhibited a growing interest in the specification and estimation of econometric relationships based on spatial panels. Spatial panels typically refer to data containing time series observations of a number of spatial units zip codes, municipalities, regions, states, jurisdictions, countries, etc. This interest can be explained by the fact that panel data offer researchers extended modeling possibilities as compared to the single equation cross-sectional setting, which was the primary focus of the spatial econometrics literature for a long time. Panel data are generally more informative, and they contain more variation and less collinearity among the variables.
In this paper we consider the estimation of a panel data regression model with spatial autoregressive disturbances, fixed effects and unknown heteroskedasticity. Following the work by Kelejian and Prucha , Lee and Liu a and others, we adopt the Generalized Method of Moments GMM and consider as moments a set linear quadratic conditions in the disturbances. As in Lee and Liu a , we assume that the inner matrices in the quadratic forms have zero diagonal elements to robustify moments against unknown heteroskedasticity. We derive the asymptotic distribution of the GMM estimator based on such conditions. Hence, we carry out some Monte Carlo experiment to investigate the small sample properties of GMM estimators based on various sets of moment conditions.
