Recently, those examining the role teachers of language minority students play in the language policy-making process have found that their autonomy has been threatened by increasing standardization as reflected in rigid one-size fits all curricular mandates focused on the learning of discrete skills in the national language, enforced high-stakes standardized testing, and external monitoring. In elucidating a perspective that considers all educational stakeholders, including teachers, as engaged in the LPP process, this article provides an account of how the collective is negotiating educational policies concerning the teaching of language and literacy to students designated as English language learners. As a members of the collective, the authors draw on participatory and ethnographic approaches to describe how resistance and agency are implicated in the LPP processes, paying special attention to the processes, actions, and impacts that have comprised our collaboration. In addition to discussing how these findings contribute to a dynamic and complex view of the role teacher agency and resistance play in the LPP process, the authors discuss the implications of their findings for promoting agentive teacher education. This article explores how continuing pressure for improvements in standardised tests, and associated measures of student learning in the Australian state of Queensland, influenced teacher learning practices. This includes specific formal, ongoing instances of teacher professional development practices, such as those described here. The research presented in this paper seeks to reveal the nature of the tensions and points of possibility for the teacher learning that transpired in one school in northern Queensland, Australia, in the context of increased attention to standardised testing and associated data. This includes multiple theoretical resources, including processes of governing through numbers, and applications to the field of education. In the inaugural tests, students in Queensland achieved poorly relative to students in most other states.

Leading from the middle: its nature, origins and importance

Educational standards movements have manifested in the widespread adoption of state-wide educational standards in mathematics and literacy in the United States. Within this policy context, the National Coalition for Core Arts Standards published educational standards for four fine arts disciplines, including music. As an alternative to the contemporary common sense of schooling, the possibilities and challenges of a democratic music education for creating counterhegemonic spaces are explored. I approach the topic of neoliberal education reforms and neoconservative values from the perspective of a current teacher educator and a former high school music teacher in a large Midwestern city in the United States. As a high school teacher, I experienced first-hand the day-to-day effects of data-driven instruction and teacher surveillance that embody neoliberal reforms. Because the school where I taught frequently fell short on state and district mandated assessments, all teachers were required to employ so-called researched-based literacy strategies and issue standardized tests resembling the ACT American College Test —one of the two prominent assessments for college admittance in the United States— every five weeks. Despite these mandates, I did manage to find small cracks for resisting neoliberal reforms, most notably in my band room, where my students and I went on an adventurous journey in collaboration by creating our own arrangements of beginning band staples as well as pop and hip-hop songs.

In this paper, I discuss education and its preparedness to work towards social justice, by drawing on examples across a number of studies. While I consider the possibilities for teachers and young people and children in schools today and present several counter narratives to those in popular circulation, I also detail initiatives that I engaged in with members during the time I was President of AARE.
