Within the broad theme of pollution prevention, earlier chapters of this book consider various management strategies to reduce the formation of waste during laboratory operations. These include reducing the scale of laboratory operations, cataloging and reusing excess materials, and recycling chemicals that can be recovered safely. Clearly, the best approach to laboratory waste is to not generate it. However, this ideal situation is seldom attained in the laboratory. Therefore, this chapter considers methods for dealing with the waste that is generated during laboratory operations and for accomplishing its ultimate disposal.

Waste disposal , the collection, processing, and recycling or deposition of the waste materials of human society. Waste is classified by source and composition. Broadly speaking, waste materials are either liquid or solid in form, and their components may be either hazardous or inert in their effects on health and the environment. The term waste is typically applied to solid waste, sewage wastewater , hazardous waste, and electronic waste. In industrialized countries, municipal liquid waste is funneled through sewage systems , where it undergoes wastewater treatment, or sewage treatment.

Some of the major types of solid waste management are as follows: a. Hazardous Wastes, c. Industrial Wastes, d. Agricultural Wastes, e. Bio-medical Wastes, f. Waste Minimization. The combined effects of population explosion and changing modern living standard have had a cumulative effect in the generation of a large amount of various types of wastes.

Understanding the Four Characteristics of Hazardous Waste

When it comes to hazardous waste disposal and management, understanding the waste your organization generates is imperative. Hazardous waste is heavily regulated, and thus cannot just be tossed out with your everyday trash. To know if your organization is handling hazardous waste, the first step is to assess its characteristics. We specialize in providing businesses and organizations with affordable nationwide hazardous waste disposal services. These high level categories each have their own characteristics that further help you as a generator define with what your are dealing.

Radioactive waste is a type of hazardous waste that contains radioactive material. Radioactive waste is a result of many activities, including nuclear medicine , nuclear research , nuclear power generation, rare-earth mining , and nuclear weapons reprocessing. It is broadly classified into low-level waste LLW , such as paper, rags, tools, clothing, which contain small amounts of mostly short-lived radioactivity, intermediate-level waste ILW , which contains higher amounts of radioactivity and requires some shielding, and high-level waste HLW , which is highly radioactive and hot due to decay heat, so requires cooling and shielding. This radioactivity naturally decreases over time, so the material is stored in appropriate disposal facilities for a sufficient period until it no longer poses a threat.

IN ADDITION TO READING ONLINE, THIS TITLE IS AVAILABLE IN THESE FORMATS:

It is hereby declared to be the purpose of this chapter to regulate the storage, collection and disposal of solid waste for all residences and businesses regardless of the amount of solid waste, if any, generated by any particular business or residence in order to protect the public health, safety and welfare and to enhance the environment for the people of the city of Ketchikan. As used in this chapter each of the following terms shall have the meaning herein stated:. Persons, businesses or companies applying for a commercial account shall provide proof of a valid Alaska business license upon request. Terms and conditions of a commercial account including limits and method of payment shall be set by the city finance department. Commercial waste does not include solid waste from apartment buildings, residential complexes with multiple dwelling units or trailer parks. In no event shall construction waste include dangerous or extremely hazardous waste of any kind, garbage, sewage waste, animal carcasses, chemical waste, petroleum waste, or asbestos. Household hazardous waste includes, but is not limited to, cleaning agents, pesticides, solvents, motor fuels, crankcase oil, and chemicals used for home repair and remodeling, auto, boat and equipment maintenance, and hobby and recreation use.

What is fly ash? Fly ash is the finely divided residue that results from the combustion of pulverized coal and is transported from the combustion chamber by exhaust gases. Over 61 million metric tons 68 million tons of fly ash were produced in Where does fly ash come from? Fly ash is produced by coal-fired electric and steam generating plants.

UNC Environment, Health and Safety EHS will provide oversight and review documentation of the waste management activities for all construction wastes generated by contractors and consultants. This includes but is not limited to the waste determination and includes sampling and testing, storage, transportation, and ultimate disposal of construction wastes. All wastes generated from construction demolition must be pre-determined as to waste type prior to storage and disposal to comply with all state and federal regulations. If a waste is determined to be a hazardous waste, PCB waste, universal waste or non-hazardous waste including recyclables , contractors and consultants must follow the construction waste management processes provided in this document. If the project team is unsure if a waste fits one of the above categories, the team should consult with EHS for further waste determination guidance. Prior to accumulating wastes and at the close of each project, all vendors must provide a detailed list of wastes to be accumulated during the project and updated if project scope changes. Furthermore, EHS must approve the shipping of all wastes generated on a construction site prior to the waste leaving site.
