Read terms. ABSTRACT: Exercise, defined as physical activity consisting of planned, structured, and repetitive bodily movements done to improve one or more components of physical fitness, is an essential element of a healthy lifestyle, and obstetrician—gynecologists and other obstetric care providers should encourage their patients to continue or to commence exercise as an important component of optimal health. Women who habitually engaged in vigorous-intensity aerobic activity or who were physically active before pregnancy can continue these activities during pregnancy and the postpartum period. Observational studies of women who exercise during pregnancy have shown benefits such as decreased gestational diabetes mellitus, cesarean birth and operative vaginal delivery, and postpartum recovery time. Physical activity also can be an essential factor in the prevention of depressive disorders of women in the postpartum period. Physical activity and exercise in pregnancy are associated with minimal risks and have been shown to benefit most women, although some modification to exercise routines may be necessary because of normal anatomic and physiologic changes and fetal requirements.

DOI : Background: Pelvic floor disorders affect many women globally. Objective: To provide a critical appraisal of the literature on the effects of pelvic floor disorders on the quality of life and functioning of pregnant and postnatal women. Methods: Available literature was reviewed and summarized to discuss the definitions, pelvic floor anatomy, dysfunctions, and the mechanism of the condition, and more specifically, on the strengthening exercises for the pelvic floor muscles. Results: Pelvic floor disorder is an important public health concern because of the high prevalence, deleterious effects on pregnancy, and its outcomes as well as impacts on the health care system. They include genuine urinary incontinence, bladder and bowel incontinence, pelvic pain, weakness of the pelvic muscles, weakness of the muscles of the core stability, and the prolapse of pelvic organs. Pregnancy and subsequent vaginal delivery are causes associated with pelvic floor muscle disorders.

The challenge of pregnancy, labor and looking after a new born is not an easy task. So the fitter you are the better you will cope with this life changing event. Although exercises in pregnancy are extremely beneficial, they can cause more harm than good if not done correctly. Medical screening for exercise should be done by the Doctor as well as the Physiotherapist to ensure that the patient underwent a basic screening, assessment or continued monitoring for the right exercise protocol for avoidance of any complications and to ensure the benefits of staying healthy and fit. Results: Evidence shows that exercise training programs designed and delivered by the Physiotherapists can relieve the prenatal post natal problems. There are center of mass changes, pressure on the organs and increased weight gain.

PHYSIOTHERAPY EXERCISES DURING ANTENATAL AND POSTNATAL

Traditionally, pregnant women were encouraged to reduce levels of physical exertion due to concerns that exercise could negatively affect pregnancy outcomes e. However, these concerns have not been substantiated and recommendations by The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists suggest that this approach was overly conservative. Currently, pregnant women are encouraged to accumulate a minimum of 20 to 30 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise on most—if not all—days of the week in the absence of medical or obstetric complications. It is important to consider that if women are new to exercise, they may need to set goals for working up to 20 to 30 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise and that the benefits of being physically active may occur with amounts below this target range.
