Nanoelectronics and Information Technology: Advanced Electronic Materials and Novel Devices

The course gives an overview of the frontiers, state of the art, market, visions and developments for some areas of microelectronics and information technology. Invited speakers from industry and university hold some of the lectures and give their view of their respective research areas and what they are working on. Apart from this the course may be an opportunity to find thesis projects and find contacts in industry. Active participation is required for at least 10 seminars, but they need not be during the same semester.

Reading requirements are set for each seminar. Participants may sign up for either the fall or spring semester, but the course may be finished any semester. Every semester is started with an introductory lecture with an overview of the area and administrative details for the course; this occasion may be counted for the attendance requirement.

Voluntary study visits to research labs may be offered during the course. An individual essay on the frontiers of microelectronics and information technology, based on one or more of the seminars, is required. The student may pick the topic, but a literature search must be included. The essay determines the grade. After the course the participants should have.

Basic courses in digital and analog electronics, wave theory, electromagnetic field theory, solid state physics and semiconductor device are recommended. A course in Information Searching is recommended, for instance may be taken in parallel with this course.

If the course is discontinued, students may request to be examined during the following two academic years. The examiner may apply another examination format when re-examining individual students.

Nanoelectronics and Information Technology

Current electronic systems include, in increasing numbers, sensors, actuators and interfaces with the user which tend to be, in turn, real micro-and nanosystems MS and NS. This is more relevant in portable systems where improved performance, the user interfaces and energy aspects are promoting the use of nanoelectronics technology even in the parts of uptake and storage of electrical energy. The smart phones are certainly a paradigm of such trends. The commercial availability of so-called "lab-on-a-chip", true MS and NS that integrate aspects of nanosensors, MS and integrated intelligence and routinely used in hospitals analytical and sensory implant developments are promoting new advances in MS and NS. From a content perspective, the educational objectives can be grouped into three main blocks:. From the standpoint of aptitude, the objectives of this course are to develop the ability to reflect and relate contents, the search, preparation and presentation of information, and the integration of knowledge work.
