In electronics , a multiplexer or mux ; spelled sometimes as multiplexor , also known as a data selector , is a device that selects between several analog or digital input signals and forwards the selected input to a single output line.

These circuits have some characteristics like the output of this circuit mainly depends on the levels which are there at input terminals at any time. Some of the combinational circuits are half adder and full adder, subtractor, encoder, decoder, multiplexer, and demultiplexer. An adder is a digital logic circuit in electronics that is extensively used for the addition of numbers. In many computers and other types of processors, adders are even used to calculate addresses and related activities and calculate table indices in the ALU and even utilized in other parts of the processors. These can be built for many numerical representations like excess-3 or binary coded decimal. Adders are basically classified into two types: Half Adder and Full Adder.

The multiplexer , shortened to "MUX" or "MPX", is a combinational logic circuit designed to switch one of several input lines through to a single common output line by the application of a control signal. Multiplexers operate like very fast acting multiple position rotary switches connecting or controlling multiple input lines called "channels" one at a time to the output. As we are giving 11 as control signals we need to check whether the input signal x3 is at the output or not. One of these data inputs will be connected to the output based on the values of selection lines. So, each combination will select only one data input. Multiplexer is also called as Mux. The block diagram of 4x1 Multiplexer is shown in the following figure. One of these 4 inputs will be connected to the output based on the combination of inputs present at these two selection lines. Truth table of 4x1 Multiplexer is shown below.

Multiplexing is the property of combining one or more signals and transmitting on a single channel. This is achieved by the device multiplexer. A multiplexer is the most frequently used combinational circuits and important building block in many in digital systems. These are mostly used to form a selected path between multiple sources and a single destination. A basic multiplexer has various data input lines and a single output line. These are found in many digital system applications such as data selection and data routing, logic function generators, digital counters with multiplexed displays, telephone network, communication systems, waveform generators, etc. In this article we are going to discuss about types of multiplexers and its design.

From the truth table the Boolean expression of the output is given as. From the above output expression, the logic circuit of 2-to-1 multiplexer.

Fundamentals of Computer Organization and Design pp Cite as. Combinational circuits provide a higher level of abstraction than the basic circuits discussed in the last chapter: Higher-level logical functionality provided by these circuits helps in the design of complex digital circuits. We have discussed several commonly used combinational circuits including multiplexers and demultiplexers, decoders and encoders, comparators, adders, and ALUs.

The Web This site. A simple way to connect multiple sources of information in analogue electronic systems is by using mechanical switches, such as those illustrated in Fig. In example a a single pole double throw switch is used to select either input A or input B to be connected to output X. Example b shows a rotary selector switch that can multiplex any one of eight inputs to a single output.

Truth table of a Logic Gates is a table that shows all the input and output possibilities for the logic gate.
